Village of Palaia Italy
Palaia is an agricultural centre located on one of the highest ridges that divide the Arno from the Valdera. Emperors Henry VI, Otto IV and Charles IV granted, with the charters of 1191, 1209 and 1355, half of the castle and court of Palaia to the bishops of Lucca and confirmed political and civil jurisdiction to the Pisans. The Florentine government extended its power over it in 1406. The parish church of San Martino, isolated and outside of the village, is a 13th century Roman-Gothic structure in terracotta, with external arches and a façade with three arcades. The inside has two aisles and a nave divided by pillars of various forms with interesting capitals. The entrance is medieval; a spiral bell-tower was constructed on it, with a low polygon-shaped embattled tower at its side. |
